Mexico celebrates 201st anniversary of independence

 Mexico has been celebrating the 201st anniversary of the start of its war for independence from Spain.

For the Mexican army the military parade offered a break from the bloody confrontation with the drugs cartels.

 Celebrations began with fireworks in Mexico City's main square, the Zocalo.

 President Felipe Calderon gave the traditional "grito" or shout of independence, honouring the call to arms made by rebel priest Miguel Hidalgo in 1810.

 Some spectators were allowed to climb onto armoured vehicles to get a better view.

 In the city of Chalma people re-enacted a battle between Spanish troops and Mexican rebels.

 Ripe guava fruit, not bullets, was the preferred ammunition.

As with the original independence struggle, women were very much involved.
